Why is a FUE punch used in FUE hair transplant?

A follicular unit is a natural group of hairs growing together. The punch makes a small circular opening around a selected unit, allowing the clinician to loosen and extract it individually. The harvested grafts are then prepared and inserted into recipient sites designed to follow the patient's hair direction and density.

Punch diameter, depth, angle, and movement matter because hair follicles can curve beneath the skin. The technique aims to collect usable grafts while limiting unnecessary injury to the surrounding donor tissue. It does not create new follicles; it redistributes available follicles.

Ask how the donor area and recipient area will be assessed, how grafts will be selected, and whether your existing hair loss may continue. Tell the clinic about scalp conditions, medicines, bleeding problems, and previous scarring.

Follow washing, sleeping, exercise, and medication instructions after surgery. Small crusts, tenderness, swelling, and temporary shedding can occur during healing. Do not scratch or pull at grafts, and protect the scalp as directed.

Contact the surgical team if pain, bleeding, swelling, or drainage is worsening rather than settling, or if the scalp becomes increasingly hot and red. Urgent care is appropriate for heavy bleeding that does not stop with the clinic's instructions, fever with feeling very unwell, or breathing difficulty.

Ask what punch size and extraction approach suit your follicle shape, how donor density will be protected, and what graft survival depends on after placement. Discuss the expected timeline for shedding, regrowth, and future hair-loss planning.
