Why is fluconazole used in antifungal treatment for thrush?

Vaginal thrush is commonly linked to an overgrowth of Candida yeast. Fluconazole works throughout the body after it is swallowed and interferes with processes the yeast needs to maintain its cell membrane. As the yeast growth is controlled, symptoms such as itching, soreness, irritation, and abnormal discharge can settle.

A clinician may choose a local antifungal treatment instead, or may recommend a different plan if symptoms are recurrent, severe, or caused by another type of yeast. Similar symptoms can also come from bacterial vaginosis, an infection passed through sexual contact, skin irritation, or another condition, so treatment should match the diagnosis.

Take fluconazole only as directed and tell the prescriber if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines. Do not share a dose with someone else or repeat treatment whenever itching returns without checking the cause. Avoid irritants such as scented washes, and keep the area dry and comfortable while symptoms settle.

If symptoms do not improve after treatment, return for assessment. A clinician may need to examine you or test a sample to confirm the cause and select a more suitable antifungal.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, fainting, or a widespread blistering rash after taking fluconazole. Arrange prompt medical review for fever, pelvic pain, vomiting, sores, bleeding, or symptoms that keep returning, because these features can point to a problem needing different care.
