Why is EVA foam orthotic used in custom orthotics?

EVA, or ethylene-vinyl acetate, is a lightweight foam that can be shaped and layered for an individual foot. Its cushioning can reduce concentrated pressure under areas such as the heel or forefoot, while its firmness can be selected to guide how the foot meets the ground. A clinician may contour the device to support alignment without making the insert unnecessarily rigid.

The material choice depends on the person's symptoms, activity, footwear, body weight, skin condition, and the amount of control needed. EVA can compress with use, so fit and comfort need review rather than being assumed from the first fitting.

Introduce a new custom orthotic gradually according to the fitting clinician's instructions. Check your skin after wearing it, especially at pressure points, and use suitable socks and shoes. The insert should sit flat without forcing the foot or creating sharp pressure. Bring the orthotic and the shoes you use most to follow-up if discomfort, slipping, or a change in walking develops.

Do not trim, heat, or reshape the device yourself unless the provider specifically directs you. Keep the material dry and follow cleaning instructions supplied with the orthotic.

Stop using the orthotic and contact the provider for a blister, open area, persistent redness, new swelling, or pain that continues after removal. Seek prompt assessment for worsening numbness, a cold or discoloured foot, or difficulty bearing weight.
