Why is a digital blood pressure monitor used in an annual health check?

Blood pressure describes the force of blood against artery walls as the heart pumps and relaxes. A cuff placed around the upper arm briefly tightens, then the monitor displays two values. The result is considered alongside your medical history, medicines, family history and other checks from the appointment. A single unexpected result can be affected by recent activity, caffeine, stress, talking during the test or an incorrectly positioned cuff. It is therefore a prompt for careful interpretation, rather than a diagnosis on its own.

Sit quietly before the measurement, keep both feet supported and rest the arm at heart level if possible. Tell the clinician if you have recently exercised, smoked, had caffeine, or missed a usual medicine. Bring a list of prescriptions, over-the-counter products and supplements. If a reading needs repeating, follow the instructions on timing and technique so that the comparison is meaningful.

Seek urgent medical assessment for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, new weakness on one side, trouble speaking, sudden confusion or a severe unusual headache.
