Why is collagen scaffold used in cartilage repair surgery?

After the damaged cartilage is prepared, the scaffold may be placed over or within the defect and secured by the surgical technique. Its porous structure gives repair cells a surface and space to organise. Collagen is a protein found in connective tissues, so a collagen-based material can gradually integrate with healing tissue and be remodelled by the body.

The repair tissue may not be identical to the original cartilage, and results depend on defect size and location, joint alignment, surrounding tissue, age, activity, and the rehabilitation plan. A scaffold does not remove the need to protect the repaired area while it heals.

Before surgery, ask how the defect will be treated and whether a scaffold is being used alone or with cells or another technique. Plan for the prescribed limits on weight-bearing and knee movement. Attend physiotherapy as scheduled; exercises are usually progressed in stages so the repair receives protection while nearby muscles regain control.

Contact the surgical team for increasing pain, swelling, wound leakage, redness, fever, or a sudden loss of movement. Urgent assessment is needed for severe calf swelling or pain, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. Do not wait for a routine appointment if the joint becomes acutely locked, unstable, or impossible to bear weight on.
