In hip resurfacing, the damaged joint surfaces are covered with metal components. The alloy forms the cap over the prepared femoral head and works against a matching socket component. Its strength helps the cap tolerate repeated loading during walking and other movement. The design retains more of the femoral bone than a standard hip replacement, although it is not suitable for every hip or every patient.
