Why is CO2 laser used in acne scar laser treatment?

A clinician directs fractional or fully ablative CO2 energy at selected areas. The energy makes precise microscopic treatment zones, or removes a thin outer layer, depending on the plan. As the skin repairs, fresh collagen can soften sharp edges and make depressed scars look less uneven. It is most relevant to textural scars; active acne, raised scars, pigmentation, and skin tone all affect whether it is suitable.

Treatment intensity is adjusted for scar depth, location, skin sensitivity, and the amount of recovery you can manage. Improvement develops during healing rather than appearing immediately, and more than one approach may be needed for mixed scar types.

Have active breakouts, cold sores, medicines, previous procedures, and a history of dark marks assessed before treatment. Follow the clinic’s instructions about stopping irritating products and arriving with clean skin. Afterward, use only the recommended cleanser, ointment, and sunscreen; do not pick peeling skin or remove crusts. Avoid heat, swimming, vigorous exercise, and unapproved acids or retinoids until the treating clinician says the barrier has recovered.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain, swelling, redness, or drainage is increasing instead of settling, or if blisters, spreading warmth, fever, or an unpleasant smell develops. Seek urgent care for facial swelling that affects breathing or vision. New or persistent darkening and pale patches also deserve review so aftercare can be adjusted.
