Why is calcipotriol used in vitamin D analogue treatment?

In plaque psoriasis, skin cells can build up quickly and form thick, scaly patches. Calcipotriol acts on vitamin D receptors in skin cells, helping slow that overactive growth and calm local inflammation. It is usually applied directly to affected plaques, so healthy skin exposure should be limited. The medicine is not the same as a dietary vitamin D supplement and should be used only in the formulation and areas prescribed.

Irritation, burning, redness or itching may occur where it is applied. Some products combine calcipotriol with another topical medicine, so follow the specific directions on your prescription rather than copying a schedule from another product.

Use a thin layer on the affected skin and wash your hands afterward unless your hands are being treated. Avoid the eyes, face, mouth and genital skin unless your clinician specifically directs otherwise. Do not cover treated areas with a tight dressing unless told to do so. Tell your clinician about kidney disease, calcium disorders, pregnancy, breastfeeding and other vitamin D products so the treatment can be selected safely.

Get advice if severe irritation, blistering, facial swelling or a spreading rash develops. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing or widespread hives. Contact your prescriber if you develop unusual thirst, frequent urination, nausea, constipation, weakness or confusion, or if large areas need treatment; these symptoms can require review of exposure and calcium balance. Do not increase the amount to speed improvement.
