Why is C-arm fluoroscopy used in epidural steroid injection?

A C-arm is a mobile X-ray system that can produce views during the procedure. The clinician uses these views to identify the spinal level, follow the needle as it advances, and check that the tip is in the planned location. A small amount of contrast may be used to outline the path of medication, when appropriate. This image guidance helps the injection target the area associated with irritation or inflammation rather than relying on surface landmarks alone. It does not remove every procedural risk, and it does not guarantee symptom relief.

Tell the treating team about pregnancy, allergies to contrast or medicines, blood-thinning medicines, diabetes, infection, or new neurological symptoms. Follow the instructions about food, drink, and medicines. Arrange help with transport if sedation is planned. Afterward, follow the activity advice you receive and monitor the injection site. Temporary soreness or altered sensation can occur; report concerns that are severe, worsening, or unexpected.

Contact the care team urgently for increasing weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, difficulty walking, fever, severe headache that is worse when upright, or spreading redness and drainage at the injection site. Seek emergency help for sudden severe neurological change, fainting, breathing difficulty, or a serious allergic reaction.

Ask which spinal level is being targeted, why image guidance is recommended for you, whether contrast or sedation will be used, which medicines need adjustment, and what symptoms should prompt a call after the injection.
