Why is botulinum toxin type A used in Botox?

Facial nerves normally release a chemical signal that tells a muscle to contract. Botulinum toxin type A interrupts that signal at the treated muscle, allowing the muscle to relax more during expressions. This can soften movement-related lines in areas chosen during consultation. It does not fill a crease, replace lost skin volume or erase every type of wrinkle, and a suitable result depends on careful placement and an appropriate dose.

Temporary tenderness, redness, swelling or bruising can occur at injection points. A heavy feeling, uneven movement or drooping near a treated area can also happen and should be discussed with the injector.

Share your medical history, allergies, medicines, previous facial procedures and any neuromuscular condition before treatment. The injector should review the muscles and movements that concern you rather than treating a label alone. Afterward, follow the clinic’s instructions about touching the area, exercise and other activities. Avoid booking an injection when the skin at the planned sites is infected or inflamed until it has been assessed.

Contact the treating clinician if increasing pain, warmth, discharge or spreading redness suggests an injection-site problem. Seek urgent help for trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing, widespread weakness, new double vision, or severe allergic symptoms such as facial swelling. Report marked eyelid or brow drooping, vision changes or difficulty closing an eye so the area can be reviewed.
