Why is a 3T MRI scanner used in musculoskeletal MRI?

The 3T label describes the strength of the scanner’s magnetic field. A stronger field can provide a detailed signal, which may help the radiology team assess small or complex structures and plan the next step. MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves rather than ionising radiation. Image quality still depends on the body area, the protocol, motion control and the radiologist’s interpretation.

Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, metal fragments, implanted devices, pregnancy and kidney problems before the appointment. Remove jewellery and other metal items, and follow instructions about contrast or eating if provided. The scanner is noisy and requires you to stay still; ask about ear protection or support if enclosed spaces make you anxious.

Seek medical assessment for persistent joint swelling, weakness, loss of movement or pain after an injury. Obtain urgent care for a deformed limb, sudden loss of strength or sensation, or severe pain with a cold or discoloured hand or foot.

Ask what structure the MRI is checking, whether contrast is needed and how long the appointment may take. Confirm when results will be reviewed and what symptoms should prompt earlier contact.
