Why does thymoma cause shortness of breath?

The thymus sits in the upper chest behind the breastbone. A thymoma is a tumour arising from this gland. As it occupies space, it may press on the lungs, airways, or nearby blood vessels, which can make deep breathing less comfortable or leave a person breathless with activity. Shortness of Breath is a common presentation of Thymoma.

Thymoma can also occur alongside myasthenia gravis, a condition that affects communication between nerves and muscles. Weakness of muscles used for breathing can add to breathlessness. Shortness of breath has many other causes, including heart, lung, infection, and anxiety-related conditions, so it needs individual assessment.

Contact a clinician promptly for new, persistent, or worsening breathlessness. Explain when it occurs, whether it happens at rest or only with activity, and whether you have chest pain, cough, wheeze, leg swelling, drooping eyelids, double vision, or muscle fatigue. Examination and chest imaging may help identify the cause.

While waiting for advice, pace activities and rest when needed. Sit upright if lying flat makes breathing feel worse. Do not drive yourself if you are severely breathless or feel faint.

Call emergency services for severe or sudden breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pressure, fainting, confusion, coughing blood, or breathing that becomes difficult while resting. Seek urgent care when breathing weakness is worsening quickly or you cannot speak in full sentences.

Ask whether the symptom could reflect pressure in the chest or muscle weakness, what tests are appropriate, how to monitor changes at home, and which symptoms require emergency assessment.
