Why does testicular cancer cause testicular lump?

Testicular Lump is a very common presentation of Testicular Cancer. The lump may feel firm and may be painless, although an ache, heaviness, swelling, or a change in the testicle can occur. Some people notice that one testicle has become larger or feels different from before.

A lump is not diagnosed by touch alone. Cysts, infection, fluid around the testicle, twisting of the testicle, and other non-cancerous conditions can also cause swelling or a mass. An ultrasound can show whether a change is inside the testicle and help guide the next step.

Arrange a prompt medical examination for any new lump, enlargement, firmness, or persistent change. Do not squeeze or repeatedly check the area, because this can increase tenderness and will not identify the cause. A clinician may examine both testicles and request an ultrasound; further blood tests or specialist review may follow.

Keep track of when you first noticed the change and whether pain, swelling, fever, or injury occurred. Seek advice even if the lump is painless.

Go to emergency care for sudden severe testicular pain, rapid swelling, nausea or vomiting with pain, or a testicle that appears higher or turned differently. These features can signal twisting, where rapid treatment matters. For a painless or gradual lump, arrange prompt outpatient assessment rather than waiting for it to disappear.

Ask whether the lump is within the testicle, what the ultrasound shows, and whether you need a urology referral. Ask which changes should prompt urgent review and how follow-up will be arranged.
