Why does salivary gland cancer cause a neck lump?

Salivary glands sit around the mouth, jaw and upper neck. A tumour can expand within one of these glands, extend into nearby soft tissue, or affect lymph nodes that drain the area. The lump may feel firm, remain on one side, or become easier to notice over time. Pain, facial weakness, numbness, dry mouth or difficulty opening the mouth can provide additional clues about local effects.

A neck lump has many possible causes, including infection, cysts and other non-cancerous growths. Its presence alone cannot identify the cause. Examination helps locate its origin and distinguish a salivary-gland mass from a lymph-node or skin lesion.

Arrange a medical assessment for a new, persistent or enlarging lump. The clinician may examine the mouth, jaw, face and neck, then arrange imaging such as ultrasound or another scan. If tissue sampling is needed, the sample can help identify the cell type and guide treatment planning. Note when the lump appeared, whether it changes with meals, and any facial or swallowing symptoms.

Seek urgent help if swelling makes breathing or swallowing difficult, or if facial weakness develops suddenly. Contact a clinician promptly for a lump that is growing, fixed, associated with persistent pain, or accompanied by unexplained weight change, bleeding or a change in facial movement.

Ask where the lump appears to arise, which examination or scan is appropriate, whether a biopsy is needed, and which symptoms should prompt faster review. You can also ask how treatment might affect saliva, facial movement, chewing or swallowing.
