Why does premature ovarian insufficiency cause vaginal dryness?

Oestrogen supports the vaginal lining and the glands that provide natural moisture. When ovarian hormone production falls or fluctuates, the lining may become thinner and less elastic, with less lubrication and a different vaginal environment. This can cause dryness, burning, itching, discomfort during sex, or a need to urinate more often. Symptoms can affect comfort even when there is no visible irritation.

Vaginal Dryness is a common presentation of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency. Dryness does not prove the cause: breastfeeding, some medicines, skin conditions, infection, and fragranced products can also irritate the area.

Try an unperfumed vaginal moisturiser regularly if a clinician or pharmacist confirms it is suitable, and use a water-based lubricant during sex. Avoid douching, scented washes, and products that sting. Gentle washing with water or a mild unperfumed cleanser is usually kinder to irritated skin.

Book an assessment if symptoms persist, affect sex, or cause urinary discomfort. A clinician can check for infection or skin problems and discuss local or whole-body hormone options based on your medical history and pregnancy plans.

Seek prompt care for unusual discharge, a strong odour, sores, fever, pelvic pain, or bleeding after sex. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pelvic pain, inability to pass urine, or rapidly worsening swelling or pain.
