Why does premature ovarian insufficiency cause periods to stop?

Menstrual bleeding follows a sequence: ovarian hormones help an egg mature, the womb lining builds, and a hormone shift triggers the lining to shed. In premature ovarian insufficiency, ovarian activity can become very low or intermittent. Without regular ovulation and the usual hormone pattern, the lining may not build and shed in the expected way, so periods can become widely spaced or stop.

Periods Stopped is a common presentation of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency. It does not by itself confirm the diagnosis. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal contraception, significant stress, thyroid conditions, and other health problems can also stop bleeding and need to be considered.

If pregnancy is possible, check for pregnancy even when you have a history of irregular cycles. Keep a record of your last bleed and any symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disturbance, vaginal dryness, or pelvic pain.
