Why does pancreatic cancer cause unexplained weight loss?

The pancreas helps the body digest food by releasing enzymes. If pancreatic cancer interferes with this function, the body may not break down or absorb nutrients normally. Poor appetite, nausea, early fullness, pain after eating, or a blocked bile duct can further reduce food intake. Cancer-related inflammation can change how the body uses protein and fat, while the illness itself may increase energy demands. Greasy or floating stools, diarrhoea, bloating, or cramping can be clues to digestive difficulty. Weight loss has many possible causes, including thyroid disease, infection, medication effects, and emotional distress, so it does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Arrange a clinical review if weight is falling without trying, especially with appetite loss, persistent abdominal or back pain, jaundice, altered stools, nausea, or unusual thirst. Record your weight trend, food intake, bowel changes, and symptoms. A clinician may assess nutrition, blood tests, digestion, and the pancreas or bile ducts. Ask whether a dietitian, enzyme treatment, or symptom support could help; use only treatments recommended for you.

Seek urgent help for inability to keep fluids down, severe weakness, confusion, fainting, yellow skin with fever, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Rapid deterioration needs prompt assessment even if the cause is not yet known.

Ask what might be driving the weight loss, whether digestion or bile flow is affected, which tests are needed, how to maintain nutrition safely, and which symptoms require urgent help.
