Why does oesophageal cancer cause unexplained weight loss?

A growth in the oesophagus can make solid food feel slow, stuck or uncomfortable. A person may begin avoiding meals, eating smaller portions or choosing only liquids. Cancer-related inflammation can also change appetite and the way the body uses energy. These effects may occur together, so weight can fall even when someone is trying to eat.

Weight loss has many possible causes and does not by itself establish oesophageal cancer. A clinician may ask about swallowing, appetite, reflux, vomiting, bowel changes and how quickly the change occurred before arranging appropriate tests.

Arrange a medical assessment for ongoing unplanned weight loss, particularly if swallowing has become difficult. Keep a short record of foods and drinks tolerated, swallowing problems, vomiting and weight changes. Softer foods, nourishing drinks and smaller, more frequent meals may be easier while you wait for advice, but do not force food if swallowing feels unsafe.

A doctor may involve a dietitian and investigate the oesophagus with tests such as an upper endoscopy. Treatment of the underlying cause and support with nutrition can be planned together.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot swallow liquids, are choking, have breathing difficulty, feel faint, or are vomiting repeatedly. These signs can indicate dehydration, aspiration or a significant blockage and need prompt assessment.
