Why does nasopharyngeal cancer cause a neck lump?

Neck Lump is a very common presentation of Nasopharyngeal Cancer. The nasopharynx sits behind the nose and above the throat, close to networks of lymph vessels. Affected lymph nodes may become enlarged on one or both sides of the neck and may be noticed before nose or throat symptoms. A lump can also result from infection, inflammation, a cyst or another non-cancerous condition, so its presence alone does not identify the cause.

Mention how long it has been present, whether it is growing, painful or firm, and whether you have blocked ears, hearing change, nosebleeds, nasal blockage, sore throat or difficulty swallowing.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a neck lump that persists or changes, especially when it is firm, enlarging or not tender. A clinician may examine the nose, throat and neck, inspect the nasopharynx with a small camera, and arrange imaging or a needle sample when appropriate. Bring a list of symptoms and medicines. Do not squeeze or repeatedly massage the lump, and do not delay assessment while waiting for it to become painful.

Seek prompt care for a rapidly enlarging lump, persistent nosebleed, new facial weakness, severe headache, worsening swallowing difficulty, noisy breathing or inability to keep fluids down. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing difficulty, sudden neurological symptoms or heavy bleeding. These warning signs need immediate assessment regardless of the lump's cause.

Where is the lump located, and which structures could be causing it? Do I need an examination of the nasopharynx, imaging or a needle sample? Which changes should prompt urgent review? Could infection or another condition explain it?
