Why does metastatic breast cancer cause persistent bone pain?

Persistent Bone Pain is a common presentation of Metastatic Breast Cancer. Bone is continuously renewed through a balance between cells that remove old bone and cells that build new bone. Cancer deposits can disrupt this balance, creating areas that are more fragile and inflaming surrounding tissue. Pain may feel deep, aching, or constant, and it can be worse with movement or at night.

Pain location does not by itself confirm the cause. Arthritis, injuries, osteoporosis, infection, and other conditions can also hurt the bones. A care team may use an examination and imaging to understand the affected area and check for a fracture or pressure on nearby nerves.

Tell the oncology team where the pain is, how it behaves, and whether it affects walking, sleep, or daily tasks. Mention new weakness, numbness, or a change in bladder or bowel control. Do not increase pain medicine or start supplements without checking, because treatments can interact and some medicines require kidney or stomach precautions. Gentle movement may help some people, but protect a painful area until it has been assessed.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain after a minor movement or fall, inability to stand or walk, new limb weakness, numbness around the body, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms can signal a fracture or pressure on the spinal cord. Contact the cancer team promptly for pain that is rapidly worsening, uncontrolled, or accompanied by confusion, marked thirst, or repeated vomiting.
