Why does mesothelioma cause shortness of breath?

The lining around each lung is called the pleura. Mesothelioma often involves this lining, which can become thickened or produce extra fluid in the pleural space. Fluid and thickened tissue leave less room for the lung to open with each breath, so ordinary activity may bring on breathlessness.

Shortness of Breath is a very common presentation of Mesothelioma. Breathlessness can also have many other causes, including infections, heart conditions, asthma, anaemia, or a blood clot, so its cause needs an individual assessment.

Contact the clinician managing the condition if breathlessness is new, worsening, or stopping usual activities. They may listen to the chest and arrange imaging or other tests to look for pleural fluid and assess the lungs. Sit upright, pace activities, and use prescribed inhalers, oxygen, or medicines exactly as directed while waiting for advice.

If fluid is contributing, a specialist can discuss whether drainage or another treatment is appropriate. Do not start or stop medicines for breathlessness without checking with a clinician.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing up blood, fainting, new confusion, or difficulty speaking in full sentences. These signs need prompt assessment regardless of the reason for the symptom.

Ask whether pleural fluid, lung compression, infection, anaemia, or another problem could be adding to your breathlessness. It can also help to ask which symptoms should prompt same-day contact and what support is available for daily activity.
