Why does breast cancer in men cause breast lump?

Breast Lump is a very common presentation of Breast Cancer in Men. A tumour may feel firm, often sits behind or near the nipple, and may not hurt. It can grow into nearby tissue, sometimes causing nipple inversion, discharge or a change in the skin. Many breast lumps are caused by conditions other than cancer, including hormonal breast tissue growth, cysts or infection. The feel of a lump cannot establish its cause.

Have any new breast lump examined, particularly if it is firm, persists or is associated with nipple or skin changes. A clinician may examine the breast and armpit, then arrange imaging and, if needed, a tissue sample. Do not squeeze the lump or delay assessment because it is not painful. Note when it appeared and whether it changes in size or with tenderness.

Book a prompt appointment for a persistent lump, nipple discharge, nipple retraction, skin dimpling or a swollen armpit. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, or redness spreading across the breast. An assessment is the safest way to separate cancer from benign causes.

Ask what examination and imaging are appropriate, whether the lump needs a biopsy, and what other causes could explain it. Ask when results will be available and which changes should lead you to return sooner.
