Why does voice box cancer cause hoarse voice?

The larynx, often called the voice box, contains vocal folds that open for breathing and come together to produce sound. For a clear voice, the folds need to move and vibrate smoothly. A cancer in this area can alter the surface of a fold, its flexibility, or its movement. The voice may become rough, weak, breathy, strained, or lower than usual.

Hoarse Voice is a very common presentation of Voice Box Cancer. More commonly, hoarseness can occur with a viral illness, voice overuse, reflux, allergies, or irritation. A persistent or unexplained change deserves examination rather than being attributed to one cause without assessment.

Arrange a medical assessment for hoarseness that does not settle or that keeps returning. Resting the voice from shouting and speaking over noise, drinking fluids, and avoiding smoke can reduce irritation, but these measures should not delay evaluation of a lasting voice change. A clinician may examine your throat or arrange a specialist view of the larynx.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, rapidly worsening swallowing difficulty, coughing up blood, or swelling of the face or neck. Prompt assessment is also important if hoarseness comes with a neck lump, persistent throat pain, pain when swallowing, or unexplained weight loss. These signs can have several causes and need examination.

Ask what may be affecting your vocal folds, whether you need a larynx examination, and what symptoms should prompt faster review. Mention how long the change has lasted, whether it varies during the day, smoking or vaping exposure, voice demands at work, reflux symptoms, and any swallowing or breathing changes.
