Short answer

Influenza can reduce appetite because fever, inflammation, fatigue, nausea, and changes in taste or smell can make food seem less appealing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main priority
Keep drinking regularly.
Easier approach
Use small portions and familiar foods.

Why eating can feel difficult

During influenza, the body directs energy toward its immune response. Fever and chills can leave you drained, while congestion may dull taste and smell. A sore throat, cough, nausea, or stomach discomfort may also make a normal meal unappealing. Loss of Appetite is a common presentation of Influenza. The priority during a short spell of poor appetite is often maintaining fluids; appetite commonly returns as the acute illness settles. Ongoing appetite loss after other symptoms ease should be discussed with a clinician.

Making intake easier

Take frequent small sips rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. Try water, broth, oral rehydration drinks, or other fluids you tolerate. Small portions of soft, bland foods may be easier than a full meal, such as soup, yoghurt, toast, rice, fruit, or eggs. Choose foods with some protein or energy when you can manage them, but do not force large meals. Rest, and avoid alcohol because it can worsen dehydration and interfere with recovery.

When to seek care

Get urgent help if you are very drowsy or confused, have trouble breathing, faint, cannot swallow fluids, or show severe dehydration such as minimal urine, a very dry mouth, or persistent dizziness when standing. Seek medical advice promptly for repeated vomiting, worsening abdominal pain, or inability to maintain fluids. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with long-term medical conditions may need earlier advice when influenza is limiting food or fluid intake.

Questions to discuss

Ask what fluids and foods suit your situation, whether nausea treatment is appropriate, and whether your medical conditions change the plan. Explain how much you have been able to drink, whether you are urinating normally, any vomiting or diarrhoea, and which medicines you have taken.
