Why house dust mite allergy can cause an itchy throat

When the immune system reacts to house dust mite particles, it can inflame the nose and upper throat. Mucus from an irritated nose may drain backward, known as postnasal drip, and repeatedly touch the throat. This can create tickling, clearing of the throat or a mild cough. Itchy Throat is a common presentation of House Dust Mite Allergy, but viral infections, reflux, dry air and other allergies can also irritate the throat.

Drink fluids regularly and try to avoid smoke, strong fragrances and other irritants that can add to throat discomfort. Managing nasal allergy symptoms may reduce postnasal drip; a clinician or pharmacist can advise on saline rinses and allergy treatments. Keep bedding clean and reduce dust around the sleeping area where practical. Avoid sharing a diagnosis based on symptoms alone if the irritation is new or persistent.

Call emergency services for throat swelling, difficulty breathing, wheezing, a weak voice, widespread hives or feeling faint. Get timely medical advice for trouble swallowing, persistent hoarseness, fever, severe sore throat, neck swelling, or symptoms that do not settle and interfere with sleep or eating.

Ask whether the throat sensation is likely linked to nasal allergy or postnasal drip, and whether reflux or infection should be considered. Review any medicines, inhalers or nasal sprays you use, including whether they could dry or irritate the throat.
