Why house dust mite allergy can cause itchy eyes

Mite particles can become airborne when bedding or furnishings are disturbed. For someone with this allergy, contact with these particles can activate mast cells in the conjunctiva, the clear tissue over the eye and eyelid lining. The released chemicals can cause itching, watering, redness and puffy eyelids. Itchy Eyes is a very common presentation of House Dust Mite Allergy, but dry eye, infection, contact lenses and other allergies may produce similar discomfort.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, as rubbing can intensify irritation. A cool clean compress may soothe symptoms, and a clinician or pharmacist can advise on suitable allergy eye drops or other treatment. Washing hands after handling bedding and reducing dust in the bedroom may help limit exposure. Remove contact lenses and seek advice if lenses make the eye feel painful or unusually red.

Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, a change in vision, injury, marked swelling around the eye, or a red eye in a contact-lens wearer. Arrange a clinical review when itching persists, keeps returning, disrupts daily activities or occurs with troublesome nasal or breathing symptoms.
