Why Does Hidradenitis Suppurativa Cause Painful Skin?

Painful Skin is a common presentation of Hidradenitis Suppurativa. The condition can inflame hair follicles deep within areas where skin rubs together. Swelling stretches nearby tissue and creates pressure, while friction from movement or clothing adds surface soreness. A lesion may feel tender before it becomes visible, then hurt more as it enlarges or drains. Healing can leave thickened skin, scars, or channels that remain sensitive. Armpits, groin, inner thighs, and the area beneath the breasts are common sites.

Pain level and appearance can vary from one flare to another. Persistent pain may also have causes unrelated to hidradenitis, so an examination is useful when the pattern is new or changing.

Reduce rubbing with soft, loose clothing and avoid shaving or fragranced products over active areas. Clean gently, pat dry, and use a clean dressing if drainage causes friction. A warm compress may soothe a deep tender lesion; stop if warmth increases swelling or discomfort. Do not squeeze or lance the area yourself. A clinician can discuss treatment for active inflammation, pain, drainage, and recurring disease rather than treating each flare as an isolated spot.

Book an assessment when pain persists, disrupts walking or arm movement, or accompanies recurrent lumps or drainage. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, red streaks, foul-smelling drainage, or feeling unwell. Severe pain with a quickly enlarging lesion warrants urgent review, particularly if you cannot move the nearby joint comfortably.
