Why does hand, foot and mouth disease cause fever?

Fever is a very common presentation of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. It may occur before or alongside a sore throat, reduced appetite, painful mouth sores, and a rash or small blisters on the hands, feet, or other areas. Mouth pain can make drinking difficult, especially for young children. Fever has many causes, so a fever on its own does not identify this infection.

Offer frequent small sips of fluid; cool drinks and soft foods may be easier when the mouth is sore. Let the child rest and use fever or pain medicine only as directed for their age and health needs. Keep them away from close contact with others while they are unwell, and wash hands carefully after wiping noses, changing nappies, or using the toilet.

Seek urgent medical care if a child is difficult to wake, has trouble breathing, develops a stiff neck, has a seizure, or looks severely unwell. Get same-day advice if they cannot drink, have very little urine, have a dry mouth or no tears, or if fever and symptoms are causing concern. Babies and children with health conditions may need earlier assessment.

Ask how to judge hydration, which pain-relief option suits your child, and when they can return to nursery or school. Describe their temperature pattern, fluid intake, urine output, rash, mouth sores, and any contact with someone who has been unwell.
