Why does gonorrhoea cause painful urination?

The urethra carries urine out of the body, and its irritated lining can feel burning or sharp during urination. Painful Urination is a very common presentation of Gonorrhoea, but urinary pain also has other causes.

Gonorrhoea may also cause unusual discharge from the penis or vagina, pelvic discomfort, bleeding between periods, or pain and swelling in a testicle. Some people have no noticeable symptoms, so testing can still be relevant after a sexual exposure.

The infection can involve the throat, rectum or genitals depending on sexual contact. Symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the site or cause, which is why a sexual-health assessment is useful.

Arrange a sexual-health appointment or medical review promptly for testing. Testing may involve a urine sample or swabs from relevant body sites. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed, and attend any follow-up recommended by the service.

Avoid sexual contact until a clinician confirms when it is safe to resume. Recent sexual partners may need testing and treatment so infection is not passed back and forth.

Seek urgent medical care for severe lower abdominal pain, fever with pelvic pain, severe testicular pain or swelling, vomiting, or feeling faint. These symptoms need prompt examination because conditions other than gonorrhoea can require urgent treatment.

Get timely advice if you are pregnant, symptoms worsen after treatment begins, or you develop a rash or joint pain alongside fever.

Ask which samples are needed for your sexual contacts, when results will be available, how partners can be notified, and whether you should be tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Ask what symptom changes should prompt urgent care.
