Why does a ganglion cyst cause wrist pain?

A ganglion cyst is a sac containing joint or tendon fluid. It often forms near a wrist joint or tendon sheath. The lump may be painless, but pressure from gripping, leaning on the hand or bending the wrist can stretch the surrounding capsule and soft tissues. Nearby nerves may also become irritated, causing aching, tingling or sensitivity.

Symptoms can change with activity, and the lump may feel more noticeable after repeated wrist use. Other wrist conditions can cause similar pain, so the location, movement pattern and examination matter.

Reduce activities that repeatedly provoke the pain, such as sustained gripping or leaning on the wrist, while keeping comfortable movement. A clinician can confirm whether the lump is consistent with a ganglion cyst and discuss observation, support, aspiration or removal when appropriate.

Do not puncture, crush or repeatedly press the lump yourself. Tell a clinician if pain is accompanied by numbness, weakness or reduced finger movement, because those findings may need a closer assessment.

Arrange an appointment for a new, enlarging, firm or painful wrist lump, particularly if it limits work or hand use. Seek prompt care after injury, or urgently if the hand becomes pale, blue, cold or weak, or if redness, warmth and fever develop.
