Why does frontal fibrosing alopecia cause a receding hairline?

Frontal fibrosing alopecia is a scarring hair-loss condition. Inflammation forms around susceptible follicles at the front of the scalp and may extend toward the temples. As the follicle is injured, the hair becomes less dense and the border can move backwards gradually. The skin may look paler, smoother, or slightly shiny, and the tiny follicle openings may become less visible. Take clear photographs of the front and temples in consistent lighting so changes are easier to describe at an appointment. A clinician may examine the scalp with magnification and discuss tests or biopsy. Treatment is selected to reduce active inflammation and preserve follicles that are still functioning.

Seek timely medical care when recession is accelerating or the hairline skin becomes inflamed, tender, scaly, or shiny. Prompt assessment is also sensible when eyebrow thinning occurs at the same time. Sudden widespread hair loss, facial swelling, eye symptoms, or a severe scalp reaction needs more urgent attention. Do not rely on the hairline shape alone to identify the cause.
