Why does food poisoning cause abdominal pain?

Abdominal Pain is a very common presentation of Food Poisoning. The stomach and intestines may react by contracting more strongly, which can feel like waves of cramping, soreness or a sharp urge to open the bowels. Pain may come with diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting or fever, but symptoms vary between people and causes.

The intensity of pain alone does not identify the cause. Food poisoning can resemble viral stomach illness, medication effects and other abdominal conditions, so the overall pattern matters.

Take frequent sips of water or oral rehydration drink, especially if you have diarrhoea or vomiting. Rest and eat small, bland meals when you can tolerate them. Avoid alcohol and foods that make symptoms worse. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before using medicines to slow diarrhoea, particularly when you have fever or blood in stools. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while unwell.

Get urgent medical care for severe, worsening or localised abdominal pain; a rigid or swollen abdomen; blood or black stools; repeated vomiting that prevents drinking; confusion, fainting or very little urine. Seek advice for ongoing symptoms, fever that concerns you, pregnancy, a weakened immune system, or if the affected person is a young child or older adult. These situations may need an examination to rule out causes beyond food poisoning.

Tell the clinician when the pain began, where it is felt, what you ate before it started and whether anyone who shared the meal is unwell. Ask whether stool testing, fluid advice or a review of regular medicines is needed.
