Why does food allergy cause facial swelling?

In a food allergy, the immune system reacts to a food protein as though it were harmful. Chemicals released during the reaction can widen blood vessels and allow fluid to collect under the skin. This deeper swelling is often called angioedema. Facial Swelling is a very common presentation of Food Allergy.

A reaction can also include hives, itching, stomach symptoms, cough, wheeze, or throat symptoms. The pattern and severity can vary, so facial swelling after eating needs careful attention even if an earlier reaction was mild.

Stop eating the suspected food and check food labels or ingredients to avoid another exposure. If you have a personalised allergy action plan, follow it. Use any prescribed emergency medicine exactly as you have been taught, and tell people around you what is happening.

Arrange an allergy assessment after a suspected reaction. Bring details of the food, timing, symptoms, medicines used, and any mixed dishes. Do not deliberately test the food again at home.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, a hoarse voice, persistent dizziness, collapse, or swelling of the tongue. These can be signs of a severe allergic reaction. Seek urgent assessment when facial swelling is spreading quickly or occurs with vomiting, widespread hives, or worsening cough.
