Why does Dupuytren's contracture cause reduced range of motion?

The condition changes connective tissue under the skin of the palm. Thickened areas may develop into cords that run toward a finger and attach near a joint. As a cord contracts, it exerts a steady pulling force, so the finger may not fully straighten. The restriction can affect one or more joints and may be easier to notice during activities that require an open hand. The limit is mechanical, rather than simply a feeling of tired muscles.

Arrange an examination when your hand cannot open as before or everyday tasks are changing. A hand specialist can record the movement limitation and explain monitoring, therapy or procedures. Continue comfortable use of the hand, but do not force a joint against a firm cord. Follow any exercise or splint plan carefully, since the right approach depends on the joints involved and the flexibility that remains.

Seek prompt care for sudden loss of movement, severe pain, a hot or red hand, or swelling after an injury. Make an appointment sooner if the finger is progressively curling, you cannot place the palm flat, or reduced movement interferes with washing, dressing or work.

Ask which joints are restricted, how movement will be tracked, whether therapy is appropriate, and what changes would make a procedure worth discussing.
