Why does cubital tunnel syndrome cause hand numbness?

Hand Numbness is a common presentation of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome. The ulnar nerve passes through a confined tunnel at the inner elbow and carries feeling from the little-finger side of the hand. Bending the elbow, leaning on it or swelling around the tunnel can irritate the nerve and interrupt its messages.

Numbness may be intermittent at first, especially during sleep or activities with a bent elbow. Some people describe pins and needles, reduced touch or an odd sense that the hand has fallen asleep. Ongoing irritation can affect fine finger control and grip.

Avoid direct pressure on the inner elbow and vary tasks that keep it bent. Keep frequently used items within easy reach, and consider a sleep position that leaves the elbow less folded if a clinician recommends it. Do not test the nerve repeatedly by leaning on the sore area.

Write down when numbness appears, which fingers are involved and whether it affects coordination. A clinician can compare sensation and strength and decide whether the neck, wrist or another cause also needs consideration.

Seek an assessment when numbness is persistent, spreading, disturbing sleep or accompanied by clumsiness or weakness. Get urgent help for sudden one-sided numbness with facial drooping, confusion, trouble speaking, severe dizziness or chest symptoms, because these require immediate evaluation.

Ask whether the numb area follows the ulnar nerve, how to position the elbow during sleep, and which exercises are suitable. Ask what signs suggest the nerve is becoming more affected and when to return for review.
