Why does scarring alopecia cause bald patches?

Bald Patches is a common presentation of Scarring Alopecia. In this group of conditions, inflammation targets the hair follicle, particularly the structures that support ongoing hair growth. As follicles are injured, hairs may shed and the affected areas can look smooth, shiny, red, darker, lighter, scaly, or tender. Loss may occur in separate patches or extend gradually between them. Some people also notice itching, burning, pain, pustules, or a change in the scalp texture. Different causes can look alike, and a dermatologist may need close examination or a biopsy.

Arrange dermatology review when patchy loss is new, enlarging, or accompanied by scalp symptoms.
