Why does cervical radiculopathy cause arm numbness and tingling?

Nerve roots leave the spinal cord through openings between the neck bones and continue into the shoulder, arm, and hand. If a root is irritated, its sensory messages may become distorted, causing pins and needles, burning, reduced feeling, or an electric sensation. The affected area often follows a pathway rather than covering the whole arm, and neck movement or coughing may increase symptoms. Pain or weakness can occur in the same distribution.

Keep gently changing position instead of holding the neck still for long periods, and avoid activities that clearly worsen the arm symptoms. Note the affected fingers, neck positions, and any weakness. A clinician can assess neck movement, reflexes, sensation, and strength, then discuss physiotherapy, medication, or further testing when appropriate.

Arrange an assessment when numbness or tingling persists, spreads, disturbs sleep, or affects work and hand use. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, or changes in bladder or bowel control with neck or back symptoms.

Ask which nerve-root pattern your symptoms follow, whether your strength and reflexes are affected, and which positions or exercises are appropriate. Ask when imaging or nerve testing would add useful information.
