Why does carpal tunnel syndrome cause wrist pain?

The carpal tunnel is a confined space at the front of the wrist. When its contents become crowded, the median nerve can be irritated and nearby tissues may also feel strained. Pain may spread into the palm or forearm and may occur with tingling or numbness. Holding the wrist bent or repeating forceful hand movements can make the discomfort more noticeable.

Reduce activities that repeatedly bend the wrist or require sustained gripping, and change position often during keyboard or phone use. Keep the wrist as straight as practical and ask a clinician whether a night splint is suitable. An examination can separate carpal tunnel symptoms from wrist joint, tendon, or neck problems and guide treatment.

Arrange care if wrist pain persists, keeps returning, wakes you, or limits hand use. Seek prompt medical attention for sudden severe pain, new hand weakness, major swelling, or an injury that changed wrist movement. Ongoing symptoms deserve assessment even when they fluctuate.
