Why do blood clots in cancer cause arm or leg swelling?

Arm or Leg Swelling is a common presentation of Blood Clots in Cancer. Veins carry blood back toward the heart. When a clot narrows or blocks a vein, blood and pressure build up behind the obstruction. Fluid can then move from the small blood vessels into nearby tissue, producing swelling, tightness, heaviness, warmth, or aching. A clot in a deep vein may affect one limb, although the location and pattern vary.

Cancer, some cancer treatments, reduced movement, surgery, and devices placed in veins can all alter clotting or blood flow. Swelling has other possible causes, including infection, injury, heart or kidney problems, and lymphatic blockage, so symptoms alone cannot confirm a clot. Medical assessment may include examination and vein imaging.

Report new one-sided arm or leg swelling, pain, warmth, colour change, or unexplained tightness promptly to the oncology or medical team. Do not massage the swollen limb or start compression garments unless a clinician advises them. Take anticoagulant medicine exactly as prescribed, tell the team about bleeding or missed doses, and do not add medicines or supplements without checking for interactions.

Keep a note of when the swelling began, how quickly it changed, and whether you have a catheter, recent procedure, reduced mobility, or previous clot. Follow the activity instructions given by your treating team while the cause is being assessed.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, severe dizziness, or a racing heartbeat with new limb swelling. These symptoms can indicate that a clot has travelled to the lungs. Get urgent help for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, a cold or pale limb, or new weakness. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or short of breath.

Ask whether you need urgent vein imaging, what treatment is recommended, how long to take it, and which bleeding symptoms require help. Ask what movement, travel, compression, and procedures are safe while the clot is being managed.
