Why does basal cell carcinoma cause skin lumps?

Basal cell carcinoma develops from cells in the outer layer of the skin. Continued growth can make the area thicker than the surrounding skin, producing a small bump, nodule, or plaque. The surface may look pearly, shiny, pink, or skin-coloured. Fine visible blood vessels, a central dip, crusting, or occasional bleeding can also occur.

The lump may be slow to change and may not hurt. That does not make it possible to identify from appearance alone. Cysts, blocked follicles, scars, benign growths, and other skin conditions can also cause lumps. A dermatologist can assess its border, surface, depth, and pattern over time; a biopsy may be needed for a firm diagnosis.

Photograph a changing lump in good light and arrange a dermatology assessment, especially if it grows, crusts, bleeds, or repeatedly breaks down. Do not squeeze or cut it. Use sun protection on exposed skin and tell the clinician about previous skin cancers, treatments, or substantial sun exposure.

Seek prompt care for rapid enlargement, persistent bleeding, spreading redness, marked tenderness, or a wound developing over the lump. A stable lump still deserves routine assessment if it is new, changing, or unlike the surrounding skin.
