What should you know about white nail fungus?

A fungal infection can affect the nail plate or the tissue beneath it. The nail may develop white patches, become thicker or brittle, separate from the nail bed, or collect debris underneath. Athlete’s foot can coexist with nail fungus because the same organisms may spread between skin and nails. A white surface is not specific, however; repeated trauma, dermatological conditions, and cosmetic products can also alter nail colour.

Keep feet clean and dry, change damp socks, use breathable footwear, and avoid sharing nail tools. Trim nails carefully without digging into the edges, and pause polish if it hides progression. A clinician may take a nail clipping or scraping before choosing topical antifungal treatment, oral antifungal treatment, laser treatment, or, in selected cases, nail surgery. Treatment needs patience because healthy nail must grow out.

Arrange an assessment if the change involves several nails, spreads, causes pain, or does not improve with sensible nail care. Seek earlier medical advice if you have diabetes, poor circulation, reduced immunity, or repeated skin infections. Prompt review is needed for redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or a rapidly painful nail, which may indicate a complication requiring different care.
