White dry mix plaster of Paris: what to know

Plaster of Paris is a gypsum-based material supplied as a dry powder. Water starts a setting reaction: the wet layers can be shaped around a body part, then harden into a supportive cast. The finished cast helps limit movement while an injury heals or maintains a corrected position during a planned treatment. It is different from the appearance of the powder alone; the clinician controls the mixture, layers, fit, and setting process. The material can generate warmth while setting, so application technique and skin checks matter.

Keep the cast dry unless your care team gives specific washing instructions, and do not insert objects inside it to scratch. Support the limb when resting and move the free fingers or toes gently if advised. Avoid cutting, trimming, or reshaping the cast yourself. Check the skin at the edges and note changes in pain, swelling, colour, sensation, or movement. Never use loose dry powder on skin or breathe it in; preparation belongs in a controlled clinical setting. Follow the review schedule so fit and healing can be checked.

Contact the treating service promptly if the cast becomes wet, cracked, loose, tight, foul-smelling, or causes rubbing. Seek urgent care for increasing pain not relieved by the advised plan, severe swelling, blue or pale fingers or toes, new numbness, inability to move them, or unusual coldness. Fever, drainage, or spreading skin redness around the cast also needs prompt review. Do not wait for a routine appointment when circulation or nerve function appears affected.
