Which specialist treats muscle contusion?

Short answer

A primary care doctor, sports medicine doctor, or orthopaedic specialist can assess a muscle contusion; a physiotherapist can guide recovery when pain or stiffness limits movement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this injury means

A muscle contusion is a bruise within or around muscle tissue, commonly caused by a direct blow, fall, or collision. The impact can damage small blood vessels and lead to tenderness, swelling, skin colour change, and reduced range of motion. It may be called a muscle bruise, dead leg, or charley horse.

For a straightforward injury, a primary care clinician can check the affected area, compare movement and strength, and decide whether imaging or specialist review is needed. A sports medicine clinician is useful when the injury happened during training or competition. An orthopaedic specialist may be appropriate when pain is severe, function is markedly reduced, or a deeper injury is suspected.

What to do while arranging care

Protect the area from another impact and pause activities that increase pain. Rest it in a comfortable position, use a wrapped cold pack for short periods, and keep the limb raised when swelling is present. Avoid forceful massage, heat, alcohol, and strenuous stretching soon after the injury unless a clinician advises otherwise. Gradual movement can be introduced as pain settles; a physiotherapist can tailor exercises and help you return to sport or work safely.

Tell the clinician when the injury occurred, what caused it, whether swelling or bruising is spreading, and which movements are difficult. Mention medicines that may increase bleeding and any earlier injury in the same area.

When to seek care promptly

Arrange prompt medical assessment for rapidly increasing swelling, severe or worsening pain, inability to use the limb normally, pronounced weakness, numbness, or a firm tense feeling in the injured muscle. Seek urgent help after a major impact, an obvious deformity, or a wound over the injury. Calf pain with new swelling, warmth, or breathlessness also needs urgent assessment because it may not be explained by a simple bruise.

If symptoms are not settling or you cannot return to ordinary movement, a clinician can check for a larger muscle tear, bone injury, or a collection of blood that needs a different treatment plan.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Does this look like a muscle contusion or another injury? Do I need imaging? Which activities should I pause, and when can I restart them? Would physiotherapy help my strength or range of motion? Which warning signs should make me seek urgent care?

Questions people ask

Can a physiotherapist treat a muscle contusion?

Yes. A physiotherapist can assess movement and create a staged plan for mobility, strength, and return to activity, while referring you for medical review if findings suggest a more serious injury.

Should I see an orthopaedic specialist for every muscle bruise?

No. Many uncomplicated bruises can first be assessed by a primary care or sports medicine clinician. Orthopaedic review is more relevant when pain, weakness, swelling, or loss of function is substantial or persistent.

Can massage be used after a muscle contusion?

Avoid forceful massage early after the injury because it may aggravate bleeding and swelling. A clinician or physiotherapist can advise when hands-on treatment is suitable.
