Which specialist treats glioblastoma?

Short answer

A neuro-oncologist usually coordinates glioblastoma care with a neurosurgeon, radiation oncologist, medical oncologist and supportive-care specialists.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the team works

Glioblastoma begins in the brain, so the team needs expertise in brain tumours, brain function and treatment effects. A neurosurgeon assesses whether tissue can be removed safely and may perform a biopsy or tumour operation. A radiation oncologist plans radiotherapy, while a medical oncologist or neuro-oncologist discusses medicines such as chemotherapy. Neurologists, specialist nurses, rehabilitation clinicians and palliative-care professionals may help with seizures, movement, speech, memory, fatigue and comfort.

Treatment planning depends on the tumour's location, its features, symptoms, previous treatment and your preferences. A multidisciplinary meeting can bring these views together. The condition is explained in more detail in the Glioblastoma information page.

What to do after a concern or diagnosis

Ask your family doctor or current specialist for referral to a centre with a neuro-oncology service. Bring scan reports, images if available, biopsy results, medicine lists and a record of seizures or other changes. Ask who will coordinate appointments and whom to contact between visits.

Your team may discuss Brain Tumour Surgery, Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy. Ask how each option fits the tumour's position and your goals, what recovery may involve, and whether a Clinical Trials discussion is appropriate.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency help for a first-time seizure, a seizure that does not stop, sudden weakness, new trouble speaking, severe confusion, loss of consciousness, or a rapidly worsening headache with vomiting. A new seizure needs urgent assessment even when the cause is not known. Persistent or changing headaches also deserve prompt medical review.

Questions for your doctor

Which specialist is coordinating my care? What does the scan show about the tumour's location? Is a biopsy or operation needed, and what function could it affect? Which symptoms should prompt an urgent call? How will treatment affect driving, work, memory or seizures?

Questions people ask

Does one doctor treat glioblastoma?

Usually, care is shared. A neuro-oncologist may coordinate decisions while surgery, radiotherapy, medicine and rehabilitation specialists contribute.

Should I seek a second opinion?

You can ask for an additional review of the diagnosis, scan and treatment plan, especially when surgery or several treatment choices are being considered.
