Which specialist treats Dupuytren's contracture?

Dupuytren's contracture develops when tissue in the palm becomes thickened and pulls one or more fingers toward the palm. A hand specialist checks which fingers are affected, how far they can straighten, and whether daily tasks are becoming difficult. Mild or stable changes may be monitored. When hand function is limited, the surgeon discusses options such as a needle-based procedure, an injection-based approach, or surgery, depending on the cord and contracture.

A certified hand therapist can measure movement, teach safe exercises, and provide a splint when appropriate. Hand stiffness and reduced range of motion can guide the assessment, but they do not by themselves establish the cause.

Start with a hand surgeon or an orthopaedic surgeon who specifically treats hand conditions. Bring a list of activities that have become harder, when the finger began bending, and any previous hand treatment. Do not force the finger straight or use vigorous stretching without advice. After assessment, the plan may include observation, targeted treatment, and structured rehabilitation through hand therapy.

Arrange a clinical assessment if a finger is progressively bending, you cannot place the hand flat, or gripping, washing, dressing, or working is becoming harder. Seek urgent help after a sudden injury with severe pain, marked swelling, numbness, colour change, or a finger that becomes cold. These features may indicate an acute problem separate from Dupuytren's contracture.

Ask which fingers and joints are involved, whether monitoring is reasonable, what treatment would improve function, and how recurrence or stiffness would be managed. Ask whether hand therapy is needed before or after a procedure and what activities should be limited during recovery.
