Which specialist performs fetal heart monitoring?

Fetal heart monitoring records the baby's heart rate and how it changes with movement or contractions. It may be done with a handheld device for a brief check or with sensors placed on the abdomen for a longer tracing. Cardiotocography, CTG, and a non-stress test are terms you may hear in maternity care.

The midwife positions the equipment, checks the recording, and explains what happens next. An obstetrician may review the tracing when there are concerns, labour complications, or a need for a medical decision.

Follow the appointment instructions and tell the midwife if you are uncomfortable, cannot feel your baby moving as usual, or notice contractions, bleeding, or fluid loss. During monitoring, remain as comfortable as possible and mention if a sensor slips or the tracing repeatedly stops.
