Which specialist performs cancer rehabilitation?

Short answer

A physiotherapist commonly leads cancer rehabilitation, working with the oncology team to improve movement, strength, function and daily activities.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the specialist does

Cancer rehabilitation may begin before treatment, continue during treatment, or support recovery afterward. The physiotherapist assesses mobility, balance, muscle strength, fatigue, pain-related movement limits and the practical tasks that matter to you. They may prescribe graded exercises, breathing work, stretching, safe activity plans or advice about conserving energy. The plan is adapted to your cancer, treatment effects, other health conditions and current ability.

Rehabilitation is often team-based. Your physiotherapist may coordinate with a medical oncologist, surgeon, radiation oncologist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, dietitian or psychologist when those services are relevant. The physiotherapist does not replace the clinician treating the cancer; they focus on helping you function as safely and independently as possible.

How to arrange an assessment

Ask your oncology team for a referral to a physiotherapist experienced in cancer care. Before the appointment, note changes in walking, stairs, lifting, balance, breathing, sleep, fatigue and self-care. Bring a list of treatments, medicines, recent procedures and any movement restrictions. Tell the physiotherapist about swelling, dizziness, numbness, bone involvement, lines or ports, and symptoms that worsen with activity so the programme can be adjusted.

When to seek prompt medical advice

Stop exercise and contact your cancer team promptly for new chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness, new confusion, a fall with injury, or rapidly worsening pain or swelling. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness or symptoms suggesting a stroke. Rehabilitation should be paused until the treating team has assessed a new or changing symptom.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which rehabilitation goals are realistic now, whether you need a physiotherapy referral, which activities are safe with your treatment and when progress should be reviewed. You can also ask whether occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutrition support or psychological care would address another barrier to daily function.

Questions people ask

Can cancer rehabilitation start before treatment?

Yes. Prehabilitation may help you prepare for treatment by addressing strength, mobility, breathing, nutrition or daily activity needs.

Does rehabilitation continue after cancer treatment?

It can. Follow-up rehabilitation may target lingering fatigue, weakness, stiffness, balance problems or difficulty returning to usual activities.
