Which specialist performs ambulatory blood pressure monitoring?

A small cuff is fitted around your upper arm and connected to a portable monitor. It records blood pressure at intervals while you follow your usual routine, including sleep. The clinician checks whether readings remain high outside the clinic and considers patterns such as higher measurements during appointments. A nurse or trained technician may fit the device, while the doctor interprets the report and discusses next steps.

Wear a loose-sleeved top and tell the clinic about medicines, sleep difficulties or arm problems before fitting. Keep the cuff in its recommended position, remain still when it inflates and write down symptoms or unusual activity. Return the monitor at the agreed time so the recorded information can be reviewed.

Monitoring is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Seek emergency help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness on one side, trouble speaking or a sudden severe headache.
