When to worry about wrist pain with a ganglion cyst

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled lump near a wrist joint or tendon. It may become more noticeable with gripping, bending, or repeated hand use, and its size can change. Pain can come from pressure on nearby tissues or irritation during movement. New tingling, reduced feeling, weak grip, or difficulty moving the fingers may suggest that a nerve or another structure needs examination. A lump that is hot, red, draining, or associated with fever needs prompt medical attention because infection or another problem must be considered.

Reduce activities that reproduce the pain, avoid pressing or trying to burst the lump, and keep the wrist in a comfortable neutral position. A clinician can examine the lump and wrist movement and decide whether observation, a splint, therapy, or another treatment is appropriate. Note when the pain appears, whether the lump changes with activity, and any altered sensation. This record can make the appointment more useful.

Arrange an assessment if pain keeps returning, interferes with sleep or everyday tasks, or does not settle with activity reduction. Seek urgent assessment after a fall or blow if the wrist looks deformed, swelling is substantial, or you cannot use the hand normally. Get prompt help for increasing redness or warmth, fever, drainage, marked swelling, new numbness, or loss of grip strength.
