When to worry about wrist pain with a distal radius fracture

A distal radius fracture affects the end of the forearm bone near the wrist. Pain, swelling, bruising, and stiffness can occur after the injury and during healing. Wrist pain is common with Distal Radius Fracture, but a change in its pattern matters. Increasing pain under a cast or splint may signal pressure, movement of the fracture, or another problem that needs examination.

Follow the fracture team’s instructions about the cast, splint, lifting, and movement. Keep the support dry and do not insert objects inside it. Elevate the hand when swelling is present, and move the fingers gently if you were told this is safe. Do not remove or loosen a cast yourself. Keep follow-up appointments so alignment and healing can be checked.

Contact your fracture service promptly if pain is worsening rather than settling, the cast feels increasingly tight, swelling is increasing, or fingers become numb, tingling, pale, blue, or cold. Seek urgent care if you cannot move the fingers, the cast is broken, there is new deformity, severe pain follows another injury, or the hand suddenly loses sensation or strength.

Ask how much pain and swelling are expected at your stage, which finger and wrist movements are allowed, and how to check circulation and sensation. Ask when the cast or splint will be reviewed and which symptoms mean you should return sooner.
